Henrik Ibsen is often referred to as the "father of modern drama" and celebrated as a national symbol by Norwegians. Among his best-known dramas is the beloved Peer Gynt, written in 1867 during Ibsen`s travel in Italy. Peer Gynt includes incidental music by another Norwegian treasure, composer Edvard Grieg.
