Chile Portillo is the oldest ski area in South America, and its history holds an important place in the legend of skiing. The first ski school was established here in the early 1940s. In the mid 1950s Stein Eriksen took over direction and hosted the first and only World Championship in alpine skiing in 1966. Today the US Ski and Snowboard Teams use Portillo as a base for their training during the summer season.The strong skiing history and link to the US Ski and Snowboard Teams has been the main inspiration to use Portillo as the 2005 06 official sweaters for US Ski and Snowboard Teams. The mountain tops are illustrated with snowboarders in the upper part of the design and the classic eight leaf rose is centered with snow crystals on both sides symbolizing the winter climate. In the center of the eight leaf rose is a sun, used to illustrate the ski teams gathering in Portillo during the summer training season.
