Black Diamond harnesses are known for their quality, durability and innovative design. There are two types of climbing harnesses by design that Black Diamond makes: a webbing type and a laminated type. Webbing climbing harness is build around a webbing that creates the skeleton for the harness, padding is added for comfort and protection and additional features such as buckles and gear loops are added as well. Laminated harness on the other hand achieves most of these features by using one piece of laminated fabric. This allows for lighter and more comfortable harness, however these climbing harnesses are also more expensive.

Select amount of padding based on the time you are planning to spend climbing. If you are using the climbing harness for sports climbing or at the gym, you will need lot less padding than if you will be climbing a big wall. This will allow you to have lighter and less expensive harness. Adjustable leg loops are a good feature if you are planning to use your climbing harness in different climates, when the amount of clothing you will wear varies. It is also a good feature to have if you tend to share your harness with fellow climbers.
